Abstract

<PICT:1068942/C1/1> Sulphamic acid is prepared by reacting urea with sulphur trioxide in a proportion which is not more than about 10% in excess of stoichiometric and sufficient excess sulphuric acid to form a free-flowing slurry containing not more than half its volume as solids while controlling the temperature between 70 DEG and 100 DEG C. Urea is continuously introduced at 8 into a mild steel vessel divided into compartments 1, 2 having agitators 5. Oleum, e.g. 24.7%, and when required H2SO4 are continuously introduced through 9, 10 to form a slurry and provide up to 10% excess SO3 and 100-200% excess H2SO4 over equimolar amounts. The slurry passes from compartment 1 through 3 to compartment 2 and after a total time 2-5 hours is withdrawn at 4. Sulphamic acid is recovered by centrifuging or vacuum filtration through glass cloth and is recrystallized from 1 : 4 water : mother liquor mixture. Ammonium bisulphate may be recovered from the filtrate which may alternatively be recycled with oleum to the reaction vessel. Fume off-take 6 may alternatively be packed and the acid passed down to absorb SO3, or be cooled to reflux SO3.
