Button-attaching machines.-To adapt a singlethread sewing-machine for attaching two or four hole buttons, the mechanism for jogging the button-holding clamp laterally of the looper shaft is capable of being thrown out of action when the machine is to be used for sewing on two-hole buttons, and the clamp is automatically held in a position midway of the extreme lateral positions, so that the movements longitudinally of the looper shaft will register with the holes in the button. The invention is described as applied to a machine having stitch-forming mechanism of the kind described in Specification 1248/15, and the mechanism by which the work-holding device 12 is jogged longitudinally and laterally is of usual construction, except as regards the mechanism for suspending, at will, the lateral movements. For this purpose, the lever 33 has hinged to it a member 38 carrying the roller 40, which is adapted to engage the cam-groove in the usual cam-wheel 22. The member 38 has cheeks 38<x> adapted to embrace an extension 33<x> of the lever 33 and is connected thereto by a short link 42 embracing an eccentric 43 secured to a shaft 44, which is mounted in the member 38 and has an arm 45 by which it can be turned to engage the roller 40 with, or disengage it from, the actuating-cam. The link is held in either extreme position by a spring 46. The disengaging movement of the member 38 occurs at an extreme lateral position of the work-holder; and to bring the work-holder to the intermediate position, a pin 41<x> on the member 38 enters a cam-slot 47 formed in the overhanging upper end of a stationary stop-bar 48 rigidly secured to the fulcrum pin 34 of the lever 33 and connected bv a bar 50 to the cam shaft 51. An adjustable stop-screw 58 is provided for the member 38.
