Abstract

A method of making an insulating refractory shaped article comprises preparing a slurry of refractory particles, expanded resinous beads (e.g. polystyrene, paraffin wax, cellulosic resin or phenol formaldehyde) a lower alkyl silicate (i.e. not more than four C atoms), water, a mutual solvent for the silicate and the water, e.g. a lower alkanol, and a gelling accelerator, e.g. an amine; pouring the slurry into a mould and letting it set; and firing the gelled shape. If polystyrene is used, it should be expanded at a temperature not exceeding 100 DEG C. The slurry may be made as follows: the expanded beads are wetted with the alkanol, e.g. industrial methylated spirits, and water, and an amine-modified alkyl silicate, e.g. as described in Specifications 575,752 and 591,149, is added thereto. Amines mentioned are piperidine, triethyl-, (di)cyclohexyl- and (tri)(di)ethanolamine. The graded refractory is added. Three specific examples are described, using sillimanite, mullite, and molochite as refractory.
