Abstract
A polyurethane or polyester is prepared by reacting either an organic diisocyanate or terephthaloyl chloride respectively with a suspension of a finely-divided diol in an inert liquid organic diluent in which both diol and polyurethane or polyester (as the case may be) are insoluble but the organic diisocyanate or terephthaloyl chloride (as the case may be) is soluble. The diluent may be diphenyl oxide, decahydronaphthalene or di-(a -methyl benzyl)-oxide. The diol may be an oxamide diol of formula HO(CH2)nNHCOXCONH(CH2)nOH, where n is 2-6, X is a single bond or <FORM:1067546/C3/1> or a group of formula -CONHY-NHCO-, where Y is -(CH2)m-, where m is 2 to 6 or <FORM:1067546/C3/2> where Z is -CH2-, -SO2- or -PO(CH3)-. When the diol is solid at the reaction temperature it is employed in finely divided form and is kept in suspension in the inert diluent. When the diol or final polycondensate is a liquid at the reaction temperature it may be kept in finely-divided form by vigorous stirring. The polycondensation may be carried out under pressure. In Examples (1), (3), (4), (5), (6), (7), (8), (9), (10) and (11) N,N1-bis-(b -hydroxyethyl) oxamide, 1,6 - bis - (b - hydroxyethyloxamido) hexane, N,N1 - bis - (g - hydroxypropyl) oxamide, bis - p,p1 - (hydroxyethyloxamido) diphenylmethane, bis - N,N1 - (b - hydroxyethyloxamido) piperazine, methyl bis-(m-b -hydroxyethyloxamido) phosphine oxide and bis-p,p1-(b -hydroxyethyloxamido) diphenylsulphone were reacted with either 1: 6-diisocyanatohexane or diphenylmethane 4,41-diisocyanate or in Example (2) with terephthaloyl chloride.
