Abstract

Conjugated diolefines and compounds containing at least one unconjugated carbon to carbon double bond are polymerized in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a protective colloid and 0.01 to 10% by weight of the monomers of an emulsifying agent which is the reaction product of 1 mole of phosphorus pentoxide with 0.3 to 4.5 moles of a nonionic surface-active reaction product of at least 1 mole of an alkylene oxide cotaining 2 to 4 carbon atoms with 1 mole of a compound containing at least 6 carbon atoms and at least 1 reactive hydrogen atom. Specified monomers are vinyl acetate, vinyl and isopropenyl ketones and ethers, styrene and substituted styrenes, vinyl naphthalene, divinyl benzene, acrylic and substituted acrylic acids and the esters, amides and nitriles thereof, maleic, fumaric and itaconic esters, vinyl acetylene, vinyl heterocyclic compounds, butadiene and haloprenes. The alkylene oxide may be ethylene, propylene, butylene, isopropylene or isobutylene oxide or epichlorhydrin, and many suitable compounds with which it may be reacted are listed including alcohols, phenols, thiols, amines, carboxylic and sulphonic acids and the amides thereof. Specified protective colloids are polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxyethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, gelatine, maleic anhydride and fumaric acid copolymers, e.g. with methyl vinyl ether, gum arabic, gum tragacanth and alginates. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of catalysts, e.g. inorganic and organic peroxy compounds and other oxygen sources, mixtures thereof with reducing agents such as alkali metal bisulphites, and azo compounds, many suitable catalysts being listed. An example describes the polymerization of vinyl acetate in aqueous emulsion in the presence of potassium persulphate, hydroxyethyl cellulose and the reaction product of 1 mole of phosphorus pentoxide with 2.7 moles of a non-ionic surface-active reaction product of 1 mole of nonyl phenol with 9 moles of ethylene oxide.
