Abstract
1,067,011. Deflecting propulsive jets on aircraft. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. June 25, 1965 [July 2, 1964], No. 27460/64. Heading B7G. A rear-mounted aircraft jet-propulsion engine has a propulsion nozzle (15) (Fig. 2, not shown) pivotally mounted on opposed pairs of links (20), (21) and movable by jacks (22) from the inoperative full-line position to the operative dotted-line position in which jet gases are deflected downwardly for the stated purpose of lifting the tail of the aircraft. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the whole aft end of the propulsion nozzle is pivoted at its top for movement within the jet pipe to deflect the gases downwardly. In both embodiments the arrangement is such that the jet stream tends to move the deflector from the operative to the inoperative position should the operating jacks fail.
