A wrench comprises a tubular handle 12, a fixed jaw 16 secured to the handle, a jaw 18 movable in a direction transverse to the handle and biased into open position by a spring 68, a wedge element 38 slidably mounted in the handle and continuously engaging the movable jaw for resisting angular displacement thereof cam means pivotally mounted on the handle, a portion of the cam means being in engagement with the movable jaw for slidable displacement thereof in a direction transverse to the handle to close the jaws, and links 88 connecting the wedge 38 to the cam means for changing the adjusted position of the movable jaw in response to movement of the wedge member 38 relative to the handle. The rear of the movable jaw 18 has an inclined surface 82 adapted to engage with the forward downwardly facing wedge surface 83 of the wedge 38. The cam means comprises a clevis member 84 mounted to straddle the forward end of the handle 12 and pivoted thereto at 52, the movable jaw 18 having an arcuate cam surface 80 which acts on a camming portion 86 of the clevis whereby the relative position of the jaws is adjusted. The centre of curvature of the arcuate surface 80 is offset from the pivotal axis 52 of the clevis and the clevis is pivotally connected to the links 88. The wedge is adjustable by axial displacement of a screw 96 threadedly engaged with a gear-wheel 98 rotatably mounted in the rear end of the handle and having external gearteeth 98 exposed through slots provided in the handle for thumb operation. The gear 98 may be locked in position by meshing engagement with a pinion gear 46 connected to the end of a shaft.
