Abstract

To simplify the marker in a marker controlled switching network over which two-wire and four-wire paths are switched, the four-wire paths are set up as two separate two-wire paths established one after the other. As shown, incoming two-wire circuits EZ are served by a marker M over connector AK1, the marker receiving digits to determine which group of outgoing two-wire circuits FZ is required and setting up a connection from the calling EZ to a free one of the wanted FZ The marker controls the network over connector AK2. A calling four-wire circuit EV signals the marker to indicate the nature of the connection required by operating relay X. Each four-wire circuit is allocated two inlets to the network which inlets may or may not be adjacent but will be distributed according to a scheme. The marker in response to digits received connects one inlet to a corresponding outlet of a four-wire circuit FV in the wanted direction. Once that connection is made the marker proceeds to set up the connection between the other pair of corresponding inlets and outlets, the corresponding pairs of outlets allocated each outgoing four-wire circuit being adjacent or being distributed in the manner of the four-wire inlets.
