Abstract

Flavours, essences, perfumes, and the like, are extracted from natural materials, such as cloves, lemon peel, tea, nutmeg, thyme, and rose petals, which are preferably in a finely-divided state, by passing a stable aerosol over or through a bed of the material, collecting the aerosol particles, and extracting the substance from the collected particles. Suitable aerosols include dibutyl phthalate or natural wax in air or nitrogen, paraffin oil in carbon dioxide, or cigarette smoke. The particles are preferably collected on an absolute filter. When dibutyl phthalate is used, the substance may be extracted therefrom by ethyl alcohol, or by dissolving in ether, extracting with dilute aqueous alkali, acidifying the alkali, and ether extracting. When cigarette smoke is used, the extraction may be affected by steam distillation into alkali, neutralizing, and ether extracting.
