Abstract

Nacreous material comprises suspended in a solid transparent resinous material, irridescent lamellae each of surface area at least 0.2 sq. mm. and carrying a metal oxide glaze. The lamellae are preferably made of glass, mica or ceramic material and are preferably 0.01 to 1 mm. thick and preferably have a surface area of 1 to 25 sq. mm. The lamellae may be used in conjunction with a nacreous pigment. The irridescent lamellae can be prepared by applying a liquid metal oxide glaze to a thin sheet of mica or glass, then heating the coated sheet followed by limited cutting up or grinding of the sheet. The resinous material may be thermoplastic, e.g. polystyrene, acrylic resins or cellulose esters, or thermosetting, e.g. polyesters or aminoplasts. The irridescent effect can be modified by adding a soluble dyestuff to the resinous material. In the Examples: (1) a polyester/styrene resin mixed with catalyst has added thereto glass lamellae with a TiO2 glaze and mother of pearl pigment, and the mixture then cured; (2) a sheet of glass is coated with a blue-coloured cellulose acetate solution containing glass lamellae having a titanium dioxide glaze. After evaporation of the solvent the resulting sheet is bonded between a sheet of cellulose acetate containing a mother-of-pearl pigment and a colourless sheet of cellulose acetate, and (3) a sheet of polystyrene is coated with a layer of a suspension in styrene of mica lamellae having an iron oxide glaze. The layer is then covered with a sheet of polystyrene and polymerized.
