Abstract

Crystallizable hydrocarbons containing a molecular constituent other than a benzene ring are purified by crystallizing in a vessel, having a space below the crystals, and heating the crystals to recover a plurality of fractions which are drained through the space. The space may be formed by introducing a heavier immiscible liquid which is drained after the crystallization or by melting a lower portion of the crystals first and draining; the space is separated from the crystals by filter means. Cyclohexane, dicyclopentadiene, p-xylene and paraffin wax may be so purified. Suitable apparatus is described in Specification 899,799. Lard, which comprises stearines, may be similarly purified.ALSO:Crystallisable organic compounds are purified by crystallising in a vessel having a space below the crystals and heating the crystals to recover a plurality of fractions which are drained through the space. The purification of p-dichlorobenzene, p-cresol and nitrochlorobenzene is exemplified and reference is also made to acetamide, acetic acid, aniline, benzoic acid, caprolactam, carbazole, m-cresol, ethyl alcohol, formic acid, phenol, propionic acid, phthalic anhydride, succinic acid, stearic acid, and triethanolamine. The process is effected in the apparatus described in Specification 899,799; the lower space is separated by filter means and is formed by introducing a heavy immiscible liquid before crystallisation and afterwards draining this liquid or by melting and draining the lower portion of crystals.ALSO:Crystallizable metals, e.g. tin and zinc, are purified by crystallizing in a vessel having a space below the crystals and heating the crystals to recover a plurality of fractions which are drained through the space. The process is effected in the apparatus described in Specification 899,799; the lower space is separated by filter means and is formed by introducing a heavy immiscible liquid before crystallization and afterwards draining this liquid or by melting and draining the lower portion of crystals.ALSO:Crystallizable elements or inorganic compounds are purified by crystallizing in a vessel having a space below the crystals and heating the crystals to recover a plurality of fractions which are drained through the lower space. The purification of sulphur, urea, and the cyanides, chlorides and sulphates of sodium, calcium and potassium is referred to. The process is effected in the apparatus described in Specification 899,799; the lower space is separated from the crystals by filter means and is formed by introducing a heavy immiscible liquid before crystallization and afterwards draining this liquid, or by melting and draining the lower portion of crystals.
