Abstract

A lubricant for use in the hot extrusion of metals consists primarily of basalt in the particle size range 25-190 B.S.S. mesh, at least 80% by weight of the basalt being of size range 25-85 mesh, and a minor proportion of glass in the particle size range 25-100 mesh. The glass may constitute 10-15 weight per cent of the whole lubricant, and is preferably of low boron content. The lubricant is normally used in the form of a disc in which the particles of basalt and glass are bound by sodium silicate.
