Abstract
1,065,373. Rear-view mirrors. Y. J. TALBOT. Dec. 19, 1963 [Dec. 21, 1962], No. 60148/63. Heading B7J. A remotely controlled external rear-view mirror head 14, Fig. 1, is adjustably secured to one end of a support lever arm 10 provided at its other end with a hemispherical projection 9 pivoted by a horizontal pin 19 to the upper hemispherical end 7 of a half-round carrier shaft 8, the sphere formed by the two parts 7, 9 being seated in an elastic bearing ring 6 provided around an opening in the top of a door panel 1, whilst the lower end of the shaft 8 is supported rotatably and vertically by a bracket 33, secured at 35 to an inner panel 3 of the door. The part 9 is recessed to receive the upper end of a control lever 20 extending along the rod 8. The lower end of the lever 20 has a slot 21 to receive a crank-pin 23 of a crank-arm 22 having a shaft 24 rotatable in an eye 16 on the rod 8. The shaft 24 has a hexagonal-sectioned bore to receive a hexagonal-sectioned manual adjusting shaft 29 provided with a knob 30, the shaft 29 passing through horizontal slots 25, 25 in the door panels 2, 3. By rotating the shaft 29 about the longitudinal vertical axis of the rod 8 the mirror head and arm 10 is also rotated about a vertical axis. If the shaft 29 is rotated about its longitudinal axis, the crank 22 causes the lever 20 to rotate about the pin 19 and thus rotate the mirror head and arm 10, about a horizontal axis. The rotation of the rod 8 is effected against the friction of a tapered bearing member 38 urged into a tapered hole in the bracket 33 by a spring 27 controlled by a nut 31 screwed on the end of the shaft 8. The rotation of the crank-arm 22 is resisted by a tapered disc member 17 secured on the shaft 29 by a pin 18 and engaging a corresponding surface of the eye 16 under the urge of a spring 28. The latter also urges a cover-plate 37 against the slot 25 in the door panel 3. In another embodiment described with reference to Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the crank-arm is replaced by a pinion engaging teeth formed on the lower side of a generally rectangular aperture in a member carried by the lower end of the lever 20.
