Abstract

1,065,197. Screening apparatus. P. W. THOMAS. Feb. 28, 1966 [Dec. 10, 1964], No. 50234/64. Heading B2H. An apparatus for separating root crops e.g. sugar beet, from extraneous matter comprises two cylindrical rollers 11, 12 arranged side by side with a clearance 13 between them and rotated by sprocket and chain mechanism 11a, 12b, 14, 15, 16 in opposite directions so that, when the corp to be cleaned is fed between the rollers, the extraneous matter is carried downwards through the clearance 13, the rollers being provided with helical ribs 11c, 12c of opposite hands which tend to carry the crop along the rollers so that the cleaned crop is discharged at one end of the rollers, the helical ribs also tending to force the extraneous matter down through the clearance 13. The rollers are mounted in a frame 10 which may form part of a crop lifting machine and are at a slight angle to the horizontal, their inclination being adjustable by adjusting the frame 10 by means of studs 20 which are engageable in alternative recesses 21 in supports 22. The crop to be cleaned is fed at the lower end of the rollers and the cleaned crop is discharged at the higher end into a receptacle 23. The clearance between the rollers may be adjustable, e.g. by shims between the roller spindle bearing housings. The speed of rotation of the rollers may be variable and they may rotate at different speeds.
