Abstract

1,064,921. Abrading. BURNDY CORPORATION. March 4, 1966 [March 11, 1965]. No. 9563/66. Heading B3D. A machine for scouring a given surface 20a on each of a plurality of articles 20 comprises a scouring member 10, means for rotatably supporting the articles with the given surfaces thereof in operative engagement with the scouring member, means for transporting the articles past the scouring member, and means for rotating the articles during transport past the scouring member. The articles, such as C-clamp electrical connectors 20, are positioned in recesses (62, Fig. 3) in chucks (18) rotatably supported in rollers (46) carried by arms 48 mounted on elements (52) which are secured to a chain (16) guided over sprockets 78, one of which is driven. The chucks 18 are formed with peripheral grooves 50 engaged by a belt (64, Fig. 3) which is carried by pulleys (66, 68) and may be driven or stationary so that as the chain (16) carries the chucks past the scouring members in the forms of brushes 10, 12 having metallic or other bristle material, the chucks and articles are rotated with the end surfaces 20a, 20b in engagement with the brushes. The articles are positioned within the openings (62) by guide tracks (74), and the elements (52) are supported by rollers 56, 58 engaging tracks 60. The brushes 10, 12 are driven by belts or gearing from an electric motor and are mounted in bearings (24, Fig. 1, not shown) on arms (26) which are interconnected by rods (32) and mounted on pivots 30 in supports 28, the rods being releasably secured in slots 34 in blocks 36 to vary the vertical position of the brushes. The supports 28 and blocks 36 are mounted on plates (42, Fig. 1) adjustably secured to a base 44 for varying the distance between the brushes.
