Abstract
Compositions comprise a vinyl chloride polymer and a chlorinated polyethylene having a chlorine content of 25-48% by weight, an intrinsic viscosity of 1.0 to 6.0 measured at 100 DEG C. in o-dichlorobenzene and a crystallinity below 1%, said chlorinated polyethylene resulting from chlorination of a substantially linear polyethylene of molecular weight between 1 million and 5 million and being present in an amount of 5 to 35% by weight of the total weight of vinyl chloride polymer and chlorinated polyethylene. The vinyl chloride polymer may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate. The chlorinated polyethylenes may be prepared by two-stage chlorination of polyethylene in an aqueous slurry, below the crystalline melting point of the polymer to a chlorine content of at least 5, preferably 5 to 17 weight per cent, and subsequently above the crystalline melting point of the polymer, optionally in the presence of oxidizing agents, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, acetyl peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, ozone and oxygen. The compositions may also comprise plasticizers, e.g. diisodecyl phthalate and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate; hydrated metl salts, e.g. of lead and manganese, such as hydrated tribasic lead sulphate and hydrated dibasic lead phosphite; and conventional stabilizers, pigments and fillers. The compositions may be moulded to form pipes, wall panels, gears, cams, cable joints, trays and luggage. Examples describe compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyethylenes and (1, 2 and 4) hydrous tribasic lead sulphate, dibasic lead stearate, monobasic lead stearate, an alkylated aryl phosphite and titanium dioxide; (3) dioctyl phthalate, stearic acid and a barium/cadmium stabilizer; or (5) an organo tin stabilizer.
