Abstract

106,406. Acetylene Illuminating Co., and Stephenson, A. Sept. 26, 1916. Dissolving acetylene.-Acetylene is supplied to a receptacle containing a solvent, such as acetone, and subjected to a temperature considerably below the normal by connecting the receptacle to a compressor, pump, accumulator &c. adapted to supply the acetylene at a pressure equal to or greater than the ultimate pressure desired or allowed; the acetylene may be supplied at a pressure which with the low temperature serves to liquify it. As shown, acetylene from a source of supply A is forced by a pump &c. C through a pipe b into a cylinder B, which is placed in a chamber D containing a cooling-medium connected to refrigerating-apparatus E. The acetylene may be cooled prior to its entry into the cylinder by making the pipe b pass through the chamber D, as indicated in dotted lines, or otherwise. In another form, the cylinder is placed in an inner chamber connected to the pipe b, the pressure and temperature not being such as to liquefy the acetylene. The expansion coils of the refrigerating-apparatus may, in another form, be arranged within the chamber D which contains a circulating brine solution in contact with the cylinder, or the expansion coils may be arranged in a chamber containing the cylinder and connected to the pipe b. The acetylene may be supplied primarily to an accumulator chamber containing the solvent and subjected to the low temperature. In a. modified method, the refrigerating-plant is used only for liquefying the acetylene and the cylinder with its solvent is cooled by the conversion of the liquid into gas, the refrigeration being effected, if desired, by cooling the gas by expansion of a part thereof. If the refrigeration is carried out in stages, the early stages may be employed in refrigerating the cylinder and its contents and, if desired, the supply pipe and the final stages employed for liquefying the acetylene, or conversely. A suitable separator may be used to extract from the refrigerated gas, prior to its entry into the cylinder, impurities of higher boiling point, such as moisture or ammonia.
