Abstract

In a system for recording a large number of variables digitally on magnetic tape, in particular variables relating to an aircraft in flight, 200 analogue variables are sub-multiplexed in groups, each less than 10, to 30 pulse duration converters (P.D.C.), each of which produces a pulse train of constant frequency but in which the width of the pulses represent the data, the P.D.C. outputs are multiplexed, in suitable groups, to three pulse code converters (P.C.C.) which digitize the duration significant pulses by counting high frequency clock-pulses for the duration of one of the duration significant pulses, and the count reached is recorded in parallel on magnetic tape. The three P.C.C's use different capacity counters, and therefore require different numbers of tracks. The six-bit coder operates at half the speed of the other two coders and its six bits are recorded as two groups of three bits on three tracks. Provision is also made for recording the time of day, intercom speech, and various other variables which are sensed by digital transducers.
