Abstract
A composition capable of extrusion into tape or coating for underground pipes is prepared by mixing 30-95 parts by weight of pitch with 5-70 parts of plasticized polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, or the copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, heating the mixture to a temperature 40-100 DEG F. above extrusion temperature, cooling to extrusion temperature, and then extruding. The polymer has a molecular weight of 20,000-60,000 and is plasticized by 65-70 parts of plasticizer, e.g. di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate per 100 parts of polymer. The polymer is added to the pitch, having a softening point of 80-200 DEG F., in the proportion of 1:3. Fillers, e.g. slate flour, mica, calcium silicate, talc, magnesia &c., and softeners, e.g. chlorinated diphenyls, anthracene oil, creosote oil &c., may be included in the pitch. The polymer is added to the molten pitch and the mixture is delivered to an extruder having a barrel along which the mixture is fed and provided with three zones, the first heated to about 250 DEG F., the second to about 325 DEG F., and the last to about 300 DEG F., the mixture is then cooled and extruded at about 250 DEG F.
