Abstract
An elastomer of ethylene-propylene-dicyclopentadiene is made by copolymerizing a mixture of the monomers, in an inert liquid hydrocarbon solvent, with a catalyst system comprising (1) a halogenated vanadyl ester of the formula O=V(OR)mXn and (2) an aluminium compound of the formula RmAlXn where R is a Cl-12 alkyl radical, X is Cl, Br, or I, and m is 1 or 2, and m+n=3, and the mol. ratio of Al to V is between 4 to 1 and 20 to 1. The elastomer recovered contains 62 to 33 wt. per cent of ethylene, 33 to 62 wt. per cent of propylene, and 5 to 20 wt. per cent of dicyclopentadiene. The catalyst, monomers, and diluent are fed continuously to the reaction zone. Hydrogen may be present. Exemplified vanadium compounds are VOCl(OC2H5)2 and VOCl2OC2H5. Exemplified Al compounds are (isobutyl)2AlCl, C2H5AlCl2, (C2H5)3Al2Cl3, and (C2H5)2AlCl. The terpolymers are recovered by known methods and vulcanized by known techniques.
