Abstract

A polyol composition for preparing polyurethane foams is prepared by polymerizing 1 to 70% by weight of the composition of one or more monomers of the formula CH2 = CRR1 where R is hydrogen, halogen or methyl radical, and R1 is halogen, phenyl or cyano radical, or an alkenyl radical having 2 to 6 carbon atoms in the presence of a polyol having reactive hydrogen atoms and a free radical catalyst at 40 to 150 DEG C., optionally in the presence of a solvent. Suitable polyols which preferably have a molecular weight of over 500, are hydroxyl - terminated polyesters, polytetramethylene glycols, trialkanolamines, sugars and polyphenols, and alkylene oxide adducts with these and with polyhydroxyalkanes, mono- and poly-amines aromatic amine/phenol/aldehyde condensation products, and phosphorus acids. Specific polymers used are, inter alia, (G) and (I) polyether-diamines prepared by reacting polypropylene glycol or glycerol/propylene oxide condensate with acrylonitrile, followed by hydrogenation, (J) a tercondensate of tetrahydrofuran, propylene oxide and dipropylene glycol, and (L) a condensate of propylene oxide with a tercondensate of phenol, aniline and formaldehyde. Specified monomers are vinyl and vinylidene halides, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, isoprene, butadiene, 1,4-pentadiene, 1,6-hexadiene, 1,7-octadiene, styrene, x-methylstyrene, ar-cyanostyrene, ar-methoxy styrene and ar-pentoxystyrene. Specified free radical catalysts are peroxides, azo compounds, persulphates, percarbonates and perborates. Many examples are given. The polyurethanes may be prepared from the polyol compositions by prepolymer, quasi-prepolymer and one-shot techniques. Specified polyisocyanates are 2,4-and 2,6-tolylene diisocyanates, durylene diisocyanate, bis(4 - isocyanato - phenyl)methane, 4,41,411 - tris - (isocyanato phenyl)methane, hexamethylene diisocyanate, xylene diisocyanates, 3,10 - diisocyanato - tricyclo-[5,2,1,02,6]-decane. Suitable catalysts are tertiary amines and phosphines, strong bases, acid metal salts of strong acids, metal chelates, alcoholates, phenolates, organic acid salts, organo-metallic derivatives of Sn, As, Sb and Bi, and Fe and Co carbonyls; many are specified. Suitable blowing agents are water and halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons. Polysiloxane polyoxyalkylene block copolymers are suitable emulsifiers.
