Abstract

Blends of polybutene-1 and a petroleum wax are obtained by mixing butene-1, a petroleum wax and a catalytic amount of a catalyst formed by mixing a compound of a metal of Group IVb, Vb, VIb or VIII, Large's Table, or manganese with an organometallic compound of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, zinc, an earth metal or a rare earth metal, and heating the resulting mixture to a temperature of 50 DEG to 160 DEG C. under a pressure from atmospheric to 17.5 kg./cm.2. Excess catalyst is preferably removed from the polymerization mixture by adding water, the amount being insufficient to wet the polybutene-1 was blend, and then removing the catalyst residues, e.g. by filtration. Paraffin waxes, e.g. mixtures of essentially straight chain hydrocarbons or intermediate fractions containing straight chain n - paraffins, isoparaffins, polycyclic paraffins and aromatics or the micro-crystalline waxes consisting of a mixture of isoparaffins, polycyclic paraffins and aromatics, may be used. The molecular weight of the polybutene-1 can be controlled by varying the polymerization temperature, adding zinc diethyl or adding hydrogen. In the examples the catalysts employed are titanium trichloride with either diethyl aluminium chloride or triethyl aluminium.
