Apparatus for deriving a pulse time-modulated signal (either a pulse width modulated signal or a pulse position modulated signal) indicative of an applied pulse code modulated signal comprises a plurality of transmission paths which are selectively enabled by the digits of the applied pulse code modulated signal for different time intervals. In one embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), a pulse position modulated output is obtained by applying a binary coded input to switches (13S1-13S4) to open the associated switch when the digit is a. 1 and to close the switch when the digit is a 0. The switches shunt delay lines W W (13DL1-13DL4) having time delays -,-, 2 4 WW » <SP>,</SP>» respectively so that when applied signal 8 16 11 1011 the output pulse is delayed by -W. 16 In a further embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) the pulse code modulated signal is applied to gates (17GA1-17GA4) which are successively enabled by timing pulses (17T1-17T4) the outputs from the gates being applied to delays (17DL1-17DL4) having successively decreasing delay times so that the outputs from all the delay units appear in coincidence on the inputs to square - wave pulse generators (17GEN1-17GEN4) which deliver a single W W W W square-wave output pulse for time »<SP>,</SP>»<SP>,</SP>»<SP>,</SP>»<SP>,</SP> 2 4 8 16, respectively, each generator being inhibited by a blanking pulse when an earlier generator is delivering an output. The outputs from the generators are combined to give a pulse width modulated output.
