Abstract
106,264. Hughes, H. R. May 11, 1916, [Convention date]. Bore-hole apparatus.-In drilling artesian wells or bore-holes for use in military mining operations, &c., a pilot bore is drilled, the pilot drill is then released and finally, without raising the drill rods, the pilot bore is enlarged above the pilot bit. The pilot bit A, Fig. 13, is connected to the drill rods by a conical or cylindrical threaded joint, the members of which have projections 14<1>, 15<1> which engage to ensure the joint being loose. The drill rods D are provided with a centering and supporting sleeve E with spiral grooves 30 for the flushing water and ratchet ends 10, 10<1> to agitate said water. The enlarging mechanism comprises two cutters 7 pivoted on a pin 24 carried by a sleeve F provided with a packed piston head 11 and with an internal, movable piston 18 loosely connected by a rod 26 to a lifting-cable 28; the two pistons are pressed apart by a spring 30<1> and the lower piston 18 carries a pivot 20 for links 21 which are connected to the inner ends of the cutters 7. The enlarging mechanism is .lowered in the drill rods by gravity, by the pressure of flushing water for which suitable passages 17 are provided, or by both, the spring 30<1> then being compressed; when the cutters 7 reach and engage the slots 2 in the drill rods, the spring expands and forces the cutters 7 outwards. The cutters 7 may have cutting ends 8, Fig. 1, or they may carry bevelled cutting rollers. The drill may be either a rotary or a reciprocating tool. The length of the enlarged part of the bore-hole may be increased by suitable manipulation of the parts. Specification 101,162 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the use of cutters with serrated sides, the serrations of one blade being staggered relatively to those of the other blade. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
