Abstract
1,062,554. Mud flaps for motor vehicles. J. MARKLAND. April 1, 1965 [April 9, 1964], No. 14697/64. Heading B7J. A mud flap 1 of hard rubber, rubber and canvas, or plastics for a motor vehicle, comprises a mounting means apertured for bolts attaching it to the wheel arch of a motor vehicle, a resiliently extensible element connecting the flap 1 to the mounting means, and stiffening means engageable with the flap to prevent swinging of the flap out of its own plane in at least one direction. In one embodiment, Figs. 1, 2, the resiliently extensible element 3 comprises a section of soft rubber bonded to the flap and stiffened by plates 4, Fig. 2 (not shown), attached one on each side of the flap by the strip attachment bolts to prevent flexing of the element 3. In another embodiment (not shown), the resiliently extensible element 3 comprises two coil springs (not shown) attached at their lower ends to the upper edge of the flap and at their upper ends to two rigid vertical stiffening stays constituting the mounting means. The stays pass downwards through the springs and extend beyond the lower ends thereof to the rear of the flap to prevent flexing of the element 3, and are of rod, tube or strip. The flap 1 is moulded with ribs 6, 7 so that a stiffened edge is left when the flap is cut to suit a particular vehicle.
