Abstract

A paraffinic wax is de-oiled by cooling to its cloud point, further cooling by the addition of cold filtrate, passing the cooled wax/filtrate mixture to a crystallization zone and subsequently to a filtration zone, introducing deoiling solvent into the filtration zone as a washing liquid, recovering a liquid filtrate containing solvent, and solid wax, from the filtration zone, and recycling at least part of the filtrate for adding to the oily wax. The "cloud point" is the temperature at which solid wax starts to precipitate from the oily wax. Various deoiling solvents are listed, a 2: 1 by volume mixture of methyl ethyl ketone <FORM:1062544/C4-C5/1> and toluene being preferred. Oily wax from 1 is water cooled in 5, mixed with cold filtrate from 32 and passed through crystallization zones 9, 11; cooled slurry from 11 is filtered at 13, 15 with the addition of fresh solvent from 41, and deoiled wax is withdrawn at 28.
