Abstract

1,062,349. Shrink packaging. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 7, 1966 [March 17, 1965], No. 11351/65. Heading B8C. [Also in Division F4] A plastics wrapper is heat-shrunk about an article by passing the loosely wrapped package through a heating tunnel in which the positions of sources of hot air are adjustable so as to bring them into close proximity with the articles. As shown the articles pass through the tunnel on a roller conveyer 2 (Fig. 3) on which the articles travel faster than each individual roller 3 by virtue of the rotation of the rollers induced by the conveyer belts and rails (4) (Fig. 1, not shown) below and alongside the conveyer. Four sources of hot air are provided, the articles first encountering the source 7 below the conveyer, then the sources 8 at the sides, and finally the source 9 above the articles. The sources 8 or 9 may be adjustable to suit the size and shape of the packages, and if required may be shaped to match the contours of the packages. Each source comprises a hollow block (Fig. 5, not shown) having parallel internal chambers perforated on the inward facing side at (12), the perforations being so formed as to collimate the air jet. The perforations are arranged in rows, preferably staggered as in Fig. 4 (not shown), and in the case of source 7, spaced at different intervals from the spacing of the rollers of the conveyer. Air for all four sources is provided from a single fan (13) (Fig. 2, not shown) via heaters (14), baffles (15) producing turbulence leading to uniform heating of the air, the temperature of which is controlled by a thermostat device (17). The ends of the tunnel are closed by curtains (5), (6), and air within the tunnel is returned to the fan via the outlet (11). The sources are preferably arranged so as to direct air on to the corners of the packages, and excess air trapped in the packages during shrinkage may be expelled through a small hole or through the seal of the wrapper.
