Abstract

1,062,271. Air cushion vehicles. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Jan. 8, 1965 [Jan. 8, 1964], No. 933/64. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle for operation over water has rigid sidewalls (3) (Fig. 1, not shown), an inflatable rear wall (4) and a set of transverse rollers (7) at the front of the cushion space, which is constructed as a plenum chamber and fed with air through ducts (17) from blowers (15). The rear blower inflates member (4) through a duct (17g) and a duct (18) leads air from the front blower to nozzles (10) which blow air over the forward surfaces of rollers (7), the air adhering to the surface of the rollers by Coanda effect to issue from the base of the rollers as a gaseous curtain. The rollers, which may be arranged in V formation, are carried by an axle (8) supported by springs (22) (Fig. 4, not shown) for deflection within a housing (21) formed in the structure (1). The rollers are of flexible construction and are inflated by pressure air led through the axle (8). They may be formed as two concentric cylinders, the concentric cavities thus formed being inflated to different pressures. The nozzle (10) may be carried by the roller mounting for vertical movement therewith. The rollers may rotate freely or they may be driven, mechanism for this and for controlling the supply of air to the rollers being described. Peripheral ribs which may be inflatable and may carry paddles may be formed on the outer surface of the rollers.
