Abstract

1,062,094. Fuel cells. SOCIETE GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES ET MECANIQUES (ALSTHOM)- Feb. 28, 1964 [March 1, 1963], No. 8430/64. Heading H1B. A fuel cell has at least one aqueous electrolyte and at least one ion-exchange membrane, with one electrode in contact with an electrolyte. Various modifications are disclosed but each complies with the above and also with the requirements that the aqueous electrolyte must (1) be (a) a large anion strong acid, (b) a large cation strong base, or (c) a buffered electrolyte; (2) if in contact with a cationic membrane contain only cations other than H<SP>+</SP> having a negligible transport number across the membrane ; (3) if in contact with an anionic membrane contains only anions except OH- having a negligible transport number across the membrane; and (4) be at a different pH than the electrolyte contacting the other electrode or than an ion-exchange membrane functioning as such an electrolyte.
