Abstract

Synthetic zeolites are prepared by acid treating a montmorillonite clay, neutralizing the mix, washing with water, and heating the residue under reflux with a solution containing sodium-hydroxide and silica sol. The acid treatment may be carried out under reflux with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid in a concentration of 1 to 40% by weight, the clay to acid weight ratio being between 0.1 and 4.0 and the zinc at the reflux temperature 1/2 to 24 hours. The neutralization is preferably carried out with ammonia and the residue is water washed until it is substantially salt free. The residue may be suspended in a solution containing 15 to 35% by weight of NaOH and silica sol. containing 30% by weight of SiO2, between 700 and 900 g. of NaOH solution per 100 g. of clay and between 700 and 900 g. of silica sol. per 100 g. of clay being used and reflux being continued until crystallization is substantially complete. The product is a mixture of zeolites containing a high proportion of faujasite and zeolites of the chabazite-gmelinite series. It may be used as a catalyst or catalyst support and with the incorporation of Group VIII metals, particularly platinum group metals, may be used as cracking or hydrocracking catalysts.
