Abstract

1061927 Making wire UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 28 Aug 1963 [7 Sept 1962] 34437/62 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A super-conducting filament, of small enough diameter that it will exhibit super-conductivity in a magnetic field greater than the critical field, is formed by including it in a suitable carrier which is then subjected to a wire drawing or swaging process to reduce its diameter. The diameter of such a filament should be less than 0À1 micron. In one embodiment a cylindrical billet of molybdenum is drilled with axial holes into which rods of niobium are inserted. The composite billet is then reduced in diameter by swaging and or drawing. The wire is then cut into lengths which are then bundled and sheathed by extruding molybdenum over it. The diameter is then reduced in the same manner as before, and so on until the requisite filament diameter is obtained. In a second method a bundle of niobium wires electro-plated with molybdenum is treated in the same manner. The carrier should be an inhibitor of super-conductivity (such as molybdenum) or an insulator. The super-conducting filaments may also be of vanadium or led or a niobium-zirconium alloy.
