Abstract
Dogs are protected against canine distemper by administering heterotypic measles virus to the young dog, and then vaccinating the dog with distemper virus after maternally transferred distemper antibody has disappeared sufficiently and allow for effective immunization. The preferred measles virus is a live attenuated form, produced by serial passage through canine kidney cell cultures; it is administered at an age from two weeks to four months after birth. The distemper vaccine, which is administered at an age of over four months, is suitably a homotypic vaccine.
