Abstract

A composition suitable for forming reconstituted sheets of tobacco comprises finely divided tobacco and methylcellulose modified by the introduction of hydrophobic groups. The hydrophobic groups may be benzyl groups, alkyl groups having 2-5 carbon atoms, hydroxy alkyl groups, substituted hydroxy alkyl groups and carboxyalkyl groups containing 1-19 carbon atoms. The methylcellulose may contain other ether and ester groups such as ethyl, propyl, benzyl and acetate, propionate, benzoate groups. Quantitative examples are given.
