Abstract

1,061,437. Cigarette making machines. K. KÍRBER. Oct. 7, 1963 [Nov. 17, 1962], No. 39385/63. Heading A2C. In a method for rearranging parallel rows of rod-like articles, such as cigarette filters, in a direction transversely to their axes in transit from a receiving point to a delivery point, the articles of each row successively receive a relative movement transversely to their axes exclusively at the transfer point. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises an intermediate conveyer 1 rotatably mounted between a magazine drum 2 and a grooved drum 3. The conveyer 1 consists of three discs 1a, 1b 1c having engagement faces 4a, 4b and 4c offset to each other by an amount equal to the pitch of the grooves on the receiving drum 3, consecutive faces on each disc having a pitch of three times that of the grooves on the drum 3. Cigarette filter lengths are fed from a magazine 6 by oscillating rotary rollers 10, 11 to the magazine drum 2 which consists of six grooved discs 2a-2#, the discs 1a, 1b and 1c entering between the discs 2a and 2b, 2c and 2d, and 2e and 2# respectively. Each filter length is cut into three double length filters by disc cutters 29, 30. The discs 1a-1c are of progressively slightly larger diameter and are mounted for rotation on a common stationary shaft by means of eccentric support bushes providing rotary bearings for the discs. The discs are driven by a dog clutch coupling and are coupled together by pin and slot connections. The circles K1, K2, K3 swept out by the discs 1a, 1b, 1c, respectively coincide at the point B where the filters are delivered to the drum 3. The arrangement and speed of rotation of the discs 1a-1c and drum 2 are such that whilst the drum 2 moves a distance corresponding to the distance between successive grooves the three longitudinally aligned cut filters in the groove at the point A are successively taken by the faces 4c, 4b and 4a each one being successively delivered to a groove in the drum 3 for subsequent alignment into an in-line row.
