Abstract
1,061,351. Gas turbine jet engines. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Jan 7, 1966 [Jan. 16, 1965], No. 2048/65. Headings F1G and F1J. A jet propulsion power plant comprises a compressor, combustion equipment and turbine arranged in series flow, the turbine being drivingly connected to the compressor, the exhaust gases from the turbine discharging through a heat exchanger to heat fluid therein, the heated fluid being utilized as motive fluid to drive an additional compressor which may be rotatable independently of the first compressor. The engine shown comprises a compressor 12, combustion equipment 14 and turbine 16, the turbine being connected to drive the compressor, and the exhaust gases from the turbine passing through the heat exchanger 32 thence to the propulsion nozzle 18. In the embodiment shown the heat exchanger 32 is in the form of a steam generator, the steam passing through line 38 to the turbine 26. The turbine 26 is connected through shaft 28 and gearing 30 to drive a ducted fan-24 disposed within duct 20, the air delivered by the fan passing through a heat exchanger 40 and thence to a propulsion nozzle 22. The heat exchanger 40 is in the form of a cooler in which steam discharged from the turbine 26 through the line 42 is condensed, the condensate returning through the line 36 to the steam generator. A portion of the air delivered by the ducted fan 24 passes through duct 44 to the compressor. The working fluid of the turbine 26 may be mercury vapour instead of steam. The compressor and turbine assembly 12, 16 may be connected to the steam turbine 26 by shaft 28 as shown or not so connected.
