Abstract

1,061,178. Selective printing. MITE CORPORATION. Aug. 4, 1964 [Aug. 22, 1963], No. 31697/64. Heading B6F. Type-wheel machines; type-carriages; powerassisted character selection; combination typeselecting mechanisms; combination of two movements of type-carrier.-A selective printer operated by a multiple wire parallel electrical input comprises a type cylinder 12, Fig. 3, mounted on a splined shaft 14 for longitudinal displacement by a cable 116 passing around pulleys 118, 120 rotatably mounted on pivoted arms 108, 110, said arms being connected to axial selector motive means for rocking the same for character selection. The said selector motive means comprises three solenoids 74, 76, 78 selectively energized to displace their cores 80, 82, 84 in the ratio of 1: 2: 4 to displace the type carrier 12 through one of eight axial character positions by rocking the arms 108, 110 about fixed pivots 106, 112, respectively. The arm 108 forms a bellcrank lever with an arm 104, whose extreme end is attached at 102 to a further cable 98 passing over pulleys 86, 88 on cores 80, 82 and a pulley 96 articulated to core 84 of the solenoid 78. Rotary character selection is effected by a similarly operated and arranged series of three solenoids 30, 32, 34, Fig. 1, whose associated cable 48 displaces angularly a spring-biased drum 60 carrying a gear 62, the latter meshing with a gear on the splined shaft 14. Hammer impression arrangements.-A hammer 24, Fig. 2, is carried on a hammer arm 154 the lower end of which is enlarged to form a hub portion 156, Fig. 1, to slide on a non- circular shaft 158, having rounded ends pivotally mounted for impression action. At one end the shaft 158 carries an arm 160 connected to a link 148 which in turn is pivotally connected to the solenoid core 162 of a hammer solenoid 152, which when energized pivots the hammer for impression. A spring 164, Fig. 4, restores the hammer after impression. Letter-spacing mechanism; carriage-return mechanism.-The spring 164, Fig. 4, which restores the hammer after impression is attached at one end to an arm 144, whose end 146 passes through a slot in the solenoid-operated link 148, said arm 144 forming a bell-crank lever with an arm 140. Attached to the arm 140 is a pawl 138 engaging with a ratchet wheel 136 fast with a drum 124 on which is wound the cable 116. The cable 116 intermediate its length is attached to a movable sleeve 130, Fig. 3, slidable on a guide rod 132 and which carries a yoke 134 received in a groove in the type cylinder 12, thus serving to shift it axially. Simultaneously with the restoration of the hammer 24 the bell-crank lever 140, 144 rotates the spring-biased letterspacing drum 124, thereby advancing the type cylinder one letter space axially. Also fast with the drum 124 is a further drum 178, Fig. 4, having attached to it one end of a cable 166, which intermediate its ends is attached to the hammer sleeve 156, said cable passing over pulleys 168, 170 to advance the hammer 24 one letter space in unison with the type cylinder 12. When the type cylinder reaches the end of a printing line the feed pawl 138 and a check pawl (not shown) of the ratchet wheel 136 are released by a depending arm 206, Figs. 2 and 4, oscillated by a shaft 196, whereupon the springs in drums 124, 178 cause a return movement of the type cylinder and hammer to the starting position. Line-spacing arrangements.-At the end of printing line a line-spacing solenoid 186, Fig. 2, is energized, whereby its core 188 displaces a link 190 to pivot a plate 194 and a line spacing pawl 198 rotates a ratchet wheel 197, held by a check pawl 200, the position of which may be adjusted by an eccentric mounting 202. Web feeding and guiding arrangements.- A record web is passed from a roll 16, Fig. 2, over a guide roller 19 and stationary guide plate 22 between the hammer and type cylinder, the web being advanced incrementally by a paper feed drum 26 having sprocket teeth 28 at each end, said drum 26 being fast with the linespacing ratchet wheel 197.
