Abstract
Threads, yarns, nets and woven or knitted fabrics made from natural or regenerated cellulose-fibres, e.g. cotton or rayon, are crease proofed and their abrasion resistance is improved by p reacting them with one or more aliphatic or aromatic acid esters of a 1:3-dihalopropanol-2 in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, e.g. sodium or potassium hydroxide. The dihalo propanol ester may have the formula: <FORM:1060902/D1-D2/1> in which X is a chlorine, bromine, iodine or fluorine atom and R is an aliphatic or aromatic acyl radical containing 2 to 30 carbon atoms. Specified esters are the acetyl, propionyl, butyryl, lauroyl, myristoyl, stearoyl, benzoyl, salicyl and napthoyl esters. The materials may also be treated with a 1:3-dihalo propanol-2. The material may be treated with a solvent solution or aqueous-emulsion of the ester, squeezed to remove excess and then treated with an aqueous solution of the alkaline catalyst or it may first be treated with caustic soda solution to form soda cellulose, squeezed to remove excess caustic soda solution and then treated with a solvent solution or aqueous emulsion of the ester. Alternatively the material may be treated with a solvent solution or aqueous emulsion of the ester, dried, impregnated with caustic soda solution, wrapped in a polythene sheet and kept with or without pressure for up to 24 hours. The materials may subsequently be subjected to a second treatment with one of the esters or a 1:3-dihalo propanol-2 or a resin. Suitable solvents for the esters are benzene, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, diethanolamine, chloroform and ethylene dichloride. The process may be carried out at a temperature of 0-60 DEG C. 0.5-50% by weight of ester being applied. 10-40% by weight aqueous solutions of caustic alkali may be utilized.
