Abstract
106,088. Rothenbach, W. April 15, 1916, [Convention date]. Tars &c., distilling; progressive evaporators. -The lighter fractions of tar and other liquids are distilled under high vacuum and the heavier fractions under a higher pressure, e.g. a low vacuum or atmospheric pressure. The distilling- columns or retorts are heated either by a single current of steam, direct or indirect, or by products of combustion, flowing in the opposite direction to the liquid under treatment. An apparatus used for distilling tar consists of two columns 2, 5 comprising distilling-elements II and Heating-elements III. Each column is divided into two stills, each of which is formed with dephlegmators I, IV at the top. The vapours generated in the four stills pass to condensers 3, 4, 6, 7 having barometric legs of such lengths that the separate fractions are distilled under successively decreasing vacua. The. condensers 4, 6, 7 also serve as preheaters. The hot pitch from the base of the column 5 is used for reheating the steam from the top of the column 5 before it is passed to the column 2, and afterwards is used to preheat the water of condensation from the top of the column 2 before it is returned to the steam generator.
