Abstract
1,060,746. Photographic copying apparatus. TECNIFAX CORPORATION. May 26, 1964 [July 5, 1963], No.21681/64. Heading G2A. In photographic copying apparatus in which a transparent cylinder rotates about a tubular light source disposed along its axis, a collimator is disposed between light source and cylinder, the collimator being in the form of a large number of tubular passages lying radially to the light source, each passage having a length of two to four times its diameter. In the form shown, the original and copy film strips 12, 10 are carried in contact by an endless belt 14 round a transparent cylinder 8, the tubular light source 6 being disposed axially within the cylinder. Between cylinder and light source is disposed a further cylinder 18 having a plurality of light-collimating openings 20 therein. Alternatively this collimating cylinder may be formed of separate short lengths of tubing adhered together Fig. 3 (not shown), or of a number of thin perforated sheets secured together as a laminated structure, with all the perforations in register Fig. 5 (not shown). The collimating cylinder is preferably made of a heat-conductive material, so that it performs an additional function of reducing the heat incident on the films, and may further be air-cooled. Collimating the light in this way is stated to improve the resolution, and the light passages are oriented so as to minimize the 'banding' effect, i.e. uneven density of reproduction. The diameter and length of the collimating apertures, and their distance from the film, all have an effect on the degree of banding, resolution, and possible printing speed. Hence optimum conditions may be determined experimentally, Figs. (not shown), 6-9. A preferred length-to-diameter ratio for the apertures is 4:1.
