Abstract
An electronically conducting semi-conductive glass composition having a room-temperature resistivity of from 104 to 1018 ohm-cm., comprises (a) SiO2, GeO2, or P2O5, and (b) 15-80 mole per cent based on the final glass composition of an oxide of Cr, Fe, Sb, Ni, Co, V, Mo, W, or As; the balance, if any, consists of other compatible constituents. Oxide (b) is present in at least two different valence states, the number of ions in the higher and lower valence states being in the ratio of from 9: 1 to 1: 9. The composition may also comprise (c) an alkaline earth metal oxide glass network modifier in amount of 30-60 mole per cent based on the total of (a) + (c). (c) may be CaO, BaO, SrO, MgO, or mixtures thereof. The valence state ratio can be regulated by oxidizing or reducing action, e.g. by means of carbon black, Pt, Ti, Fe, air, O2 or H2, performed during or after the preparation or formation of the glass. The glass may be used as described in Specification 1,058,186.
