Abstract

Copolymers of alpha-olefines and halogen-containing alpha-olefines of the formula CH2=CH-(CH2)n-CH2X, where n represents an integer in the range of 1 to 15, and X represents chlorine, bromine, or iodine are made by copolymerizing the monomers either together or sequentially, in the presence of a catalyst system comprising: (1) TiCl3 or TiCl4, (2) an aluminium trialkyl and/or a halogen-containing organo-aluminium compound, and (3) an aliphatic or aromatic ether and/or an aliphatic or aromatic tertiary phosphine. The copolymer may be aftertreated to replace some of the halogen atoms by amino groups. The alphaolefin may be ethylene, propylene, butene-1, 3-methyl-butene-(1), pentene-(1), 4-phenyl pentene-(1), 4-phenyl butene-(1), 5-phenyl pentene-(1), hexene-(1) or styrene. The copolymerization may be effected in bulk, or in the presence of a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon solvent or diluent. The copolymers are recovered by conventional "low-pressure" techniques. Exemplified copolymers are alternating and block copolymers of propylene with 5-chloropentene-1, propylene with 11-chloroundecene-(1), ethylene with 5-chloropentene-(1), propylene and 4-chlorobutene-1, propylene and 11-bromoundecene-1, and propylene and 5-iodopentene-1. The halogen atoms in the copolymers may be replaced by aniline or morpholine groups, and the treated copolymers formed into ribbons, fibres, filaments, films or sheets which can be subsequently dyed with acid dyestuffs.
