Abstract

Crystalline aluminosilicate is formed by reacting silicate ions, in aqueous alkaline medium, with hydroxyaluminate ions which are in concentration equilibrium with aluminium-containing complex anions. The complex anion is preferably a complex of aluminium with phosphate, the phosphate being supplied to the reaction mixture as trisodium and/or disodium hydrogen phosphate, tripotassium phosphate or tri-(tetraalkylammonium) phosphate, the preferred alkyl group being methyl. The reaction mixture also comprises a source of silica, for example silica sol, silica gel, silicic acid or sodium silicate, and a source of alumina, for example activated, gamma or alpha alumina, alumina trihydrate, sodium aluminate or aluminium phosphate, the last-mentioned compound when used also supplying part of the necessary phosphate. The reaction mixture may also comprise sodium hydroxide to aid in pH regulation and to provide the cation necessary for electrovalence balance in the aluminosilicate product. The reaction preferably is carried out in the presence of preformed seed crystals of the desired product at a temperature of from 80 DEG to 125 DEG C. and at a pH of from 9 to 13, a pH of 11 being optimum for the formation of a product having a faujasite crystal structure. Aluminosilicate product having a faujasite crystal structure is obtained from a reaction mixture formed from AlPO4, Na3PO4.12H2O and sodium metasilicate in Examples 1, 5, 6 and 7; from AlPO4, Na3PO4.12H4O, Na2HPO4.7H2O and sodium metasilicate in Example 2; and from sodium aluminate, Na2HPO4.7H2O and sodium metasilicate in Examples 3 and 4. Aluminosilicate product having a chabazitegmelinite crystal structure is obtained from a reaction mixture formed from AlPO4, Na3PO4.12H2O Na3PO4.12H2O and colloidal silica in Example 11. Alternatively, the complex anion may be a complex of aluminium with arsenate, tartrate, citrate, phytate, ethylenediaminetetraacetate, sulphate or perchlorate; the reaction mixture comprises sodium aluminate, Na2HAsO4.7H2O and sodium metasilicate in Example 9, and sodium aluminate, sodium hydrogen tartrate monohydrate and sodium silicate in Example 10, aluminosilicates of faujasite crystal structure being obtained.
