Abstract
1,059,935. Level detector for material. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 23, 1965 [March 11, 1964], No. 10277/64. Headings B8E and B8S. A pressure-sensitive device 11 carried by a boom 4 is used to detect the level of material in a container. The device consists of a mounting 13 attached to the boom and a flexiblywalled hollow protuberance 12 projecting from the mounting. The protuberance may be a flexible hemisphere as shown, or a bellows. When the protuberance contacts the material whose level is to be detected, the flexible walls are distorted and a signal is given. The mounting and the inside of the protuberance may be metallic or metal-coated to provide electrodes 14, 15. In this case the signal is electric, e.g. the device operating as a switch when the two electrodes touch as shown, or the variable capacitance between the electrodes being used to unbalance a bridge circuit controlling a relay. Alternatively, the signal may be provided by fluid pressure generated by flexure of the protuberance, e.g. to operate a pneumatic relay. The device may be used to control the loading of a vehicle 7 (Fig. 1, not shown), from a hopper (6) by means of a conveyer running along the boom 4, which in this application is pivoted (at 8) to the hopper. The signals from the level.sensing device operate the motor control of a hoist (9) which controls the boom attitude.
