Abstract

1,059,725. Automatic control. ARMCO STEEL CORPORATION. Aug. 21, 1963, No.33089/63. Heading G3R. In a system for automatically controlling an operation performed on a moving web, strand or series of articles to maintain a physical property or condition of the material constant, electrical pulses dependent in sign on the sense of deviation of the property are integrated by a circuit having a single resistor and capacitor until sufficient capacitor voltage initiates correction and, simultaneously, discharges the capacitor. Integrator. In Fig. 2, D.C. pulses of one polarity or the other, according to the sense of deviation of a variable, are applied to terminals 40, 41 of an adjustable resistance-condenser integrating circuit 47, 46 so that, if a deviation persists in one sense to a sufficient degree, the voltage across the condenser is effective to operate one of two relays (not shown), to correct the variable by adjustment in the appropriate sense. At the same time, a relay 48 or 49 is operated to disconnect condenser 46 from the control system, e.g. by opening normally closed contacts 50, 51, and completing a discharge circuit for the condenser, e.g. by closing normally open contacts 57, 58. When the condenser voltage falls sufficiently to de-energize the relays, integration commences again. Thickness control. Integrators of the above type are incorporated in a three-stand four-high metal strip cold rolling mill. Electric signals from an inductive type thickness gauge between the first and second stands are filtered and applied through one integrator to control screw-down motors associated with the first stand to correct strip thickness. Means are provided to prevent this control for a time, after each operation of the screwdown motors, sufficient to permit the corrected strip to reach the gauge. This time is automatically adjusted in dependence on strip speed. Control is also prevented if the gauge is off the strip or if one screw-down motor only is operated to produce camber. Electric signals from an X-ray type thickness gauge after the third stand are applied through another integrator to control screw-down motors associated with the third stand to correct strip thickness in a similar manner. Tension control. Electric signals produced by a roll detecting strip tension control a motor driving the rolls of the third stand. Auxiliary features. There is provision for injecting test signals into the control system and for manual control. Strip footage and thickness indicators and recorders are provided.
