Abstract

1,059,656. Vehicle suspensions; motor vehicles. M. BROCKLESBY. Aug. 25, 1965 [May 26, 1964], No. 21804/64. Headings B7D and B7H. [Also in Divisions B8 and E1] A self-propelled vehicle has a load-carrying body I, Fig. 5, incorporating two endless scraper chain conveyers 2, Figs. 2, 3, 4 (not shown), and carrying a scoop 3 arranged for movement between a lower position shown dotted in which it can be driven into a pile of material and a raised position shown in full in which it discharges scooped material on to the conveyers, the latter being operative to convey the material towards the front of the body for storage and for discharge therefrom. The body 1 comprises a deck plate 4 and upright side plates 5, the latter being interconnected by a cross-member 6 used for trimming the material on the conveyers 2 and by cross-members 7 used to support a driver's cab 8. The conveyers 2 are driven by an hydraulic motor 18. The scoop 3 is pivoted at 21 to the side plates 5 and is attached to two side cheeks 22 also pivoted at 21, each cheek 22 being connected at 23 to an hydraulic ram 24 which is pivotally attached at 25 to the side plates 5. In the lowered position of the scoop a cross-beam 46 thereon engages a cross-beam 45 on the body 1. The front of the body is provided with two pivoted doors 26 operated by hydraulic rams 27. The vehicle is mounted on front wheels 28 and rear wheels 29, the latter being independently driven by two diesel engines 31. Alternatively, the wheels 29 may be driven by electric motors supplied from a generator driven by a single prime mover or by hydraulic motors supplied from pumps driven by a single prime mover. The front wheels 28 are mounted on a subframe 34 which is pivoted at 35 to the plates 5 and are interconnected to the latter by hydraulic rams 37. A cruciform-shaped beam 38, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), which is pivoted at 39 to the frame 34 carries the wheels 28 on swivelling stub axles, and a double-ended hydraulic ram 41 is connected by drag links 42 to steering arms 43 for steering the wheels 28. All of the hydraulic rams are supplied by pumps 44 driven by the diesel engines 31, and the driver's cab 8 is provided with a swivel seat and dual controls for operation of the vehicle in either direction. In operation the vehicle approaches the pile of material with the scoop in the lowered position, Fig. 3 (not shown). The rams 37 are then actuated to tilt the body 1 and further lower the scoop to the position shown dotted in Fig. 5, the scoop being thereafter driven into the pile. The rams 24 are then actuated to raise the scoop to the discharge position shown in full and the conveyers 2 are operated to move the material to the front of the vehicle. When the latter is full the body 1 is lowered. To discharge the vehicle the doors 26 are opened and if necessary the body 1 is tilted. Modifications (not shown) include the doors 26 being replaced by or combined with a shoot, the front wheels 28 being driven instead of the rear wheels 29, the wheels 28, 29 and the drive mechanism being mounted on a chassis which carries a tiltable body, the wheels 28, 29 being replaced by crawler tracks and the scoop being mounted for longitudinal movement of the body so that it can be driven into the pile of material with the body stationary.
