A carpet has as secondary backing a paper that has been impregnated with a polymer latex. As described a paper comprising cellulosic fibres, and possibly fibres of nylon or polyacrylonitrile, of thickness 0À005 inch to 0À02 inch is impregnated with a polymer latex, the polymer being natural or a synthetic rubber or synthetic resin, e.g. a homopolymer or copolymer of a hydrocarbon monomer or of a substituted monomer, examples of olefins, vinyls, acrylics and hydrocarbon monomers being given. A copolymer of styrene and butadiene is preferred. The paper is fastened to the back of the carpet either by means of an adhesive which preferably comprises a polymer latex and may include a mineral filler, or, where the carpet is a tufted one, e.g. rayon tufts, by applying the paper to the binding composition on the primary backing whilst this is still wet. The paper which may be coated on one or both sides with any of the above mentioned polymers, e.g. vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride or have such coating applied as a preformed layer, may be perforated to facilitate drying of the adhesive or binding composition. The paper may be embossed to give it additional resilience and preferably after impregnation is capable of being stretched to 125 to 180% of its original length before it tears.
