Abstract
1,059,161. Magnetic core shift registers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 21, 1963 [July 20, 1962], No. 27967/62. Heading G4C. [Also in Division H3] A bi-directional shift register employing two multi-aperture saturable magnetic cores per bit employs, as shown, cores 10 each with input aperture 12 and output apertures 13, 14 the winding 21 or 22 being selected for leftward or rightward shift respectively. The case is first " blocked " by a pulse or winding 24 sufficient to saturate it everywhere clockwise round the main aperture; this represents binary zero. An input pulse on line 15 or 16 (dependent on the direction of shift) can now reverse the direction of magnetization of one arm of aperture 12 and at the same time of the inner arms of apertures 13, 14. A priming pulse on line 21 or 22 then reverses the flux direction round aperture 13 or 14 to induce an output pulse in one of lines 17, 18 which are linked with the cores respectively to the left and right. Should the core be blocked (binary zero) the priming pulse will be insufficient to effect switching. The output pulse is supplied to the next adjacent core and a blocking pulse then returns the core to its " zero " state. The extension to three and more directional shift registers is described; in such systems further input and output apertures are required.
