Abstract

1,059,090. Discharging fluids by fluidpressure; diaphragm compressors. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. Dec. 28, 1965 [Dec. 31, 1964], No. 52957/64. Headings F1N and F1R. In a fluid container of the type in which the contents are discharged by expanding a bag within the container by fluid-pressure, the bag is arranged in a compartment, the interior of which is isolated from the interior of the container by a closure member which is arranged to be opened by the action of introducing the expanding fluid to the bag. As shown in Fig. 1 the collapsed bag 5 is housed in a compartment in the form of a piston 2 the end of the cylinder being closed by a cap 4. Fluid introduced at 3 causes the piston to displace the cap 4 and expands the bag which has a flexible pipe in its interior connected at one end to the piston 2 and having a restricted outlet at the other end so that the bag is projected into the container before expanding. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), a piston 13 slidable on a rod 14 closes the end of a cylinder enclosing the collapsed bag which is attached to the piston and the end of the container so that fluid introduced into the bag forces the piston to the opposite end of the container; the bag is reinforced to ensure that this happens before it inflates. In a further modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the bag is disposed between two pistons, initial movement of the first piston breaking sealing means around the second piston which is then forced along a guide rod to the opposite end of the container, movement of the first piston also controlling valve means for introducing fluid into the bag after the sealing means has been broken. A perforated and dimpled liner 10 is fitted inside the container.
