Abstract

1,058,604. Colour television. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. Feb. 21, 1964 [March 1. 1963], No. 7440/64. Heading H4F. In a colour television system there is transmitted a luminance signal and a chrominance signal produced by quadrature amplitude modulation of a colour carrier wave by two colour-difference signals, the direction of the phase modulation of the chrominance signal being reversed at line frequency, and one of the side bands of the chrominance signal being attenuated or suppressed, whilst at a receiver for the system means are provided for respectively adding and subtracting the chrominance signal relating to corresponding points in successive line periods, whereby to derive outputs which when demodulated represent respectively the colour-difference signals without substantial cross-talk due to the attenuation or suppression of the pass band. The reversal of the direction of phase modulation may be effected in the manner described in Specification 1,005,855, e.g. by switching by 180 degrees the modulation axis of one of the colour difference signals. The chrominance signal is modulated with carrier suppression. The attenuation or suppression of the chrominance pass band is effected by a filter included either in the chrominance channel or in the channel for the combined luminance and chrominance signal. The latter method is preferred with the chrominance carrier located at the upper extremity of the luminance band and the filter having a Nyquist flank with the carrier frequency located at the minus 6 db. point. Reference is made to the transmission of the chrominance signal with enhanced amplitude to improve signal-to-noise ratio but at the cost of some measure of compatibility. Reference is also made to the use of filters in the receiver. The receiver's operation is based on a one-line-duration delay line through which the received chrominance signal is applied to two adding stages, the signal also being applied directly to one stage and via a 180 degrees phase reverser to the other. In addition, the adding stages also receive reference oscillation at chrominance carrier frequency, the phase of the oscillation applied to one stage being in quadrature with that applied to the other and also being subjected to 180 degrees phase reversals at line frequency. The outputs of the adding stages are applied to conventional amplitude demodulators to obtain the colourdifference signals.
