Abstract

Emulsifying agents are prepared by reacting the residues from the distillation of synthetic fatty acids obtained by the oxidation of hydrocarbons (15-50 C atoms) with a solution of an alkali metal oxide or hydroxide and one or more alkaline earth metal oxides or hydroxides. The residues contain up to 20% by weight of fatty acids (up to 25 C), the remainder being polymer acids, oxyacids, aldo- or keto-acids, condensation products thereof and unsaponifiables. Examples describe the use of residues from the oxidation of paraffins and isoparaffins oxidized with potassium permanganate or peroxides. The reaction with the metal compounds takes place in a mineral oil, e.g. diesel oil, and the products are used to form a water-in-oil emulsion for use as drilling fluids.ALSO:Emulsions, suitable for use in drilling fluids comprise a water-in-oil emulsion incorporating a product obtained by saponifying a mixture of mineral oil and a residue resulting from the distillation of synthetic fatty acids, by a solution of an alkali metal oxide or hydroxide and one or more alkaline earth metal oxides or hydroxides (see Division C2). Emulsions are prepared using fatty acid residues in diesel oil saponified with sodium hydroxide, calcium oxide and barium hydroxide. Further barium hydroxide or a colloidal agent such as trassgel may be added.
